1. Select Your Seeds

This is the hard part! There are so many seeds to choose from, so come prepared with your vision and information about your garden, and our experts will guide you to start seeds that are the right fit. Think about:

Your growing zone (we’re zone 5 in Guelph)

The space you have to grow your seeds

The amount of light your garden gets

What you and your family want to eat

2. Get Your Equipment

Here in Guelph, we’ll all be starting our seeds indoors soon, though many can be sown directly as the season allows. Whether you do a simple DIY or go all-out with grow lights and greenhouses, your seeds will need your help to start life off on the right foot. We recommend providing the following basic conditions for the best results:

A tray for starting seeds

Plenty of light and heat to help your seeds germinate (a south-facing window or a grow light works best)

Warmth to germinate your seeds (cozy room or a heat mat—on top of the fridge is perfect!)

3. Soil Mix for Seeds

Whether you buy it or make it yourself, seed starting mix is one of the most important supplies to have on hand when starting your seeds. Consider the following requirements when making or buying a seed starting mix:

Good drainage to keep seeds from rotting (fine-textured peat moss)

Moisture retention so seeds don’t dry out (vermiculite and perlite)

4. Seedling Care

When your seeds begin to sprout, the real work begins! The first leaves that emerge from seeds are called cotyledons, which are followed by a second set of “true leaves.” After your seedlings emerge:

Thin them! Pull any that are starting to grow too close together to ensure the success of others

Keep them fertilized (Evolve Organic Seedling Starter is a great option)

Maintain proper moisture levels

5. Hardening Off

After your seedlings have a few sets of true leaves and are sturdy and strong, it’s time to harden them off. Start by gradually introducing your seedlings to the outdoors for a few hours per day. Then, once they’ve become acclimatized:

  • Plant your seedlings according to the instructions on the seed packets
  • Add a bit of compost for an extra boost, along with Root Rescue to introduce beneficial microorganisms!
  • Keep your seedlings well-watered and protected
