Container Requirements
To start creating your container garden, buy one of our pots in store! The bigger the container, the more room for beautiful plants and their roots. Browse our Greenhouse for inspiration on pretty and unique planters that fit your ideal, plant arrangement aesthetic.
Designing Your Planter
Worried your container is going to look wonky? Don’t stress—even a total amateur can create a planter that looks professionally curated. All you need to do is follow the simple formula of Thriller + Filler + Spiller + Chiller! Just make sure you choose plants with similar care requirements; a plant that loves full sun and one that prefers shade won’t be happy in the same container.
Thriller Plants
Thrillers are the tall focal point of your arrangement—you only need one! They add height to your planter to create a nice, balanced shape. Our favourite thrillers include:
- Canna Lilies
- Flowering Ginger
- Palms
- Cordyline
- Mandevilla
Plant your thriller in the centre or the back of your planter pot, so it doesn’t block the view of your other pretty plants.
Filler Plants
These plants fill out the space in the middle of your planter. They’re more mounded, lush, and compact. Some of our favourite fillers include:
These plants fill out the space in the middle of your planter. They’re more mounded, lush, and compact. Some of our favourite fillers include:
- Coleus
- Begonias
- Impatiens
- Upright Fuchsia
- Daisies
- Lantanas
- Geraniums
- Pentas
We recommend planting fillers in groups of 3, 5, or 7 to create the most visually satisfying look.
Spiller Plants
Long, trailing plants that cascade down the sides of your container will function as your spiller plants. Plant them all around the edge—the way they hang downward completes the perfect balanced shape against your voluminous fillers and tall, showy thrillers. Our go-to spillers for mixed planters include:
- Sweet Potato Vines
- Creeping Jenny
- Calibrachoa (Million Bells)
- Fuchsia
- Alyssum
- Lobelia
- Ivy
If your spillers get too long and unruly, you can give them a little trim midsummer to tidy them up.
Chiller Plants
Most folks stop at the spiller stage to complete their container arrangements, but we like going the extra mile and adding some wow factor! Chillers are striking statement plants with bold colours and exciting shapes. They bring a little extra personality and flair to the arrangement. Here are some ideas to make your mixed arrangement uniquely yours:
- Flashy tropicals like Crotons, Alocasia, Colocasia
- Tasty culinary herbs like mint or Thai purple basil
- Colourful ornamental grasses like Purple Fountain Grass
- Edible plants like strawberries or hot peppers
