Landscaping Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All: Why We Don’t Believe in Staple Plants

When choosing the plants for your landscape, we don’t believe that a universal solution will work for everyone, and that’s a good thing! Landscape designers and architects consider many factors when selecting the right plants for your landscape, intending to shape your yard into a space that speaks to you and your household. Rather than choosing from “plants that work for everyone,” we prefer to ask, “What will work for this client and this space?”

Landscaping Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

The beauty of developing a landscape is that it is a custom installation every time. Not only does this mean that every client gets a custom yard that reflects their style, but it also means that our team stays fresh with new challenges and projects. We treat each project with a new assessment and consideration for what the property owner is looking for in terms of aesthetics and functionality. If the completed project is a space that our client is excited to spend time in, we’ve done our job right!

Standard Things We Consider When Choosing Plants for a Landscape

When considering plants for your landscape, we start by looking at a few different factors:

Microclimate: the weather in your exact area may be warmer or colder, windier or calmer, and wetter or dryer, depending on the location of your property. For example, valleys will have different microclimates than hilltops.

Soil Composition: the acidity and properties of your soil will help determine which plants will grow best.

Sunlight: how much sun your yard gets and how that will change throughout the year.

Seasonal Requirements: adding evergreens is a great way to keep your yard looking beautiful all year long.

However, our most important factor to consider is you! Enjoying your landscape is about you, first and foremost, and this is why we don’t recommend a staple plant for every yard or project. Even if you have the same microclimate, sunlight, and soil composition as your neighbour, that doesn’t mean you should have the same yard as them!

Your landscaping can reflect your interior design, incorporate space for your hobbies, and be as high or low maintenance as you’d like. We promise that you won’t be worried about fitting a “staple plant” into your yard if you have a landscape that suits you.
