It happens every year; the snow hasn’t even hit the ground yet, and we’re already dreaming of next summer. Some folks are gearing up for next year by planting trees and shrubs to establish in time for next spring—by the way, we’ve still got time for a few small, last-minute projects before the holidays—but many are thinking bigger and dreaming up full-fledged landscape makeovers. At this point in the year, we’re at the height of fall, and the difference between our fall garden and our spring and summer gardens is vividly apparent. We’ve just spent three solid seasons looking around our landscape, noticing all the areas where we had colour, as well as the areas that seemed a little lacking. Furthermore, we’ve also spent a great deal more time outside, which means most of us have been adding to our mental wishlist of outdoor features:
“If only we had a bigger deck…”
“Wouldn’t it be nice if we got a hot tub and sauna?”
“I’ve always wanted a waterfall!”
If these thoughts crossed your mind this year, don’t wait until next year to dream again. Start planning while your fantasy landscape is still crisp in your head, and you’ll really have something to look forward to in the spring!
At some point, we’ve all fallen guilty of doing something too quickly, then wishing we’d done it differently—whether it was the car you bought too hastily or the college roommate you wish someone warned you about. Since you won’t be breaking ground on your plan until next spring, now is the perfect time to come up with the framework of your project because, let’s face it, you’re going to change your mind about something!
Perhaps you initially dreamed of staining your deck with the cool-toned, ash-gray stain you saw in a magazine, but then you notice that it clashes with the rust-red trim on your house. Or, perhaps you imagined covering your lawn with perennial gardens, but later, you realize you actually want more space for entertaining.
When you have the broad strokes of your project planned in fall, you have a lot more time to sit on it and mull over every decision you’ve made. You can compare, contrast, and change just about anything you want up until “go-time,” and by then, you’re much more likely to be satisfied with the result.
