The holiday decorating trends for 2020 range from cozy and classic to fanciful and soft. Even among the themes that venture further away from the traditional Christmas colours, you’ll still find a place for the poinsettia, because the most popular Christmas plant in North America has also expanded its colour palette. Here’s a rundown of the poinsettia colours we have on hand at Royal City Nursery this year, along with how they complement the biggest holiday decorating trends of 2020 and other colour schemes.
The Beloved Red Poinsettia
The original radiant red poinsettia will always be a pleasure to behold, hence its enduring popularity. The red poinsettia pairs fetchingly with gold and emerald green. In 2020, these classic Christmas colours are alive and well in the Cardinal trend, which uses our favourite cheery red winter bird as a motif, and the Ho Ho Ho trend, which celebrates Santa and the elves. The red poinsettia also fits right in with Checked Into Cozy, a theme that showcases the black and red buffalo check pattern synonymous with lumberjacks.
This year we have red poinsettias in 6.5”, 8”, and 10” pots, as well as red poinsettia trees in 10” pots. They all come with a gold pot cover. We have some decorated poinsettias to take the look up a notch too!

A Christmas Angel: The White Poinsettia
The angelic white poinsettia is lovely for a simple theme of white and gold. You could also pair it with red poinsettias in our Ho Ho Ho theme. If you’re interested in weaving the white poinsettia into a less traditional theme, a delightful trend to consider this year is Lux Lodge, a ski chalet-inspired combination of wood, burgundy, and teal. The white poinsettia is also at home in this year’s Mistletoe trend, which warms us up with sage, crystal, and soft whites.
Our white poinsettias are available in 6.5”, 8”, and 10” pots.
White Speckles on Red: The Glitter Poinsettia
It might look like someone splattered white paint on a red poinsettia, but let me assure you: the glitter poinsettia grew that way. Consisting of the traditional Christmas colours delivered with pizzazz, the glitter poinsettia complements both eclectic styles and more traditional themes like Ho Ho Ho. Get your glitter on with glitter poinsettias in 8” or 10” pots.

How to Care for Poinsettias: A Quick Guide
Temperature needs: Caring for your poinsettia begins when you take it out of the store, and your first duty is keeping it warm. As it’s a tropical plant, it’s extremely sensitive to cold, so keep your poinsettia covered in paper for the walk from the store to your vehicle.
At home, choose a place where the poinsettia won’t be subjected to cold drafts. A ledge near a poorly insulated window should be avoided, for example. On the other end of the spectrum, the poinsettia doesn’t take kindly to hot drafts either, so keep it away from heater blasts.
Finally, you want to protect the poinsettia from major temperature fluctuations between day and night, as this is difficult for the plant to handle. If your poinsettia starts to droop and drop leaves, this could be why. Its “happy places” for temperature are:
- Day: 18 to 21 Celsius
- Night: 16 to 18 Celsius
Sunlight: As for sunlight, poinsettias like it bright, and for a minimum of six hours a day.
Water: The poinsettia is not a particularly thirsty plant. Water it only when the surface of its soil is dry to the touch. Empty out any water that has collected in the saucer immediately so the soil doesn’t get waterlogged. If you overwater your poinsettia, it will notify you with yellow leaves near the base of the plant. Yellow is not a poinsettia colour you want to see; it doesn’t fit into any of the 2020 holiday decor trends!
