5 Expert-Approved Plants That Thrive in the Heat

5 Expert-Approved Plants That Thrive in the Heat

Hydrangeas are my spirit plant—beautiful, sun-loving, and just a little dramatic in the heat. Like these beloved blooms, I soak up the sunshine but start to wilt when the temperatures soar. And these days, that kind of weather is becoming more common across Southern Ontario. Hot, dry summers are now the norm, as evidenced by dusty garden beds and brown, dormant lawns (don’t worry—your grass isn’t dead, it’s just conserving energy until cooler, wetter weather returns).

While heat-tolerant plants like sedums are reliable performers in tough spots—think driveways, sidewalks, and other sun-scorched corners—they’re not the only options. There are plenty of other resilient plants that offer beauty, texture, and pollinator appeal without breaking a sweat. We’ve rounded up five of our favourite plants that thrive in both full sun and drought conditions. Whether you’re refreshing a garden bed or filling a challenging space, these heat-loving picks will help your garden stay vibrant all summer long. And as always, stop by and see us—we’re happy to help you find the perfect plant for your space.

1. Bush Honeysuckle (Diervilla lonicera)

Dwarf Bush Honeysuckle

This fast-growing, deciduous native shrub offers vibrant colour and interest from spring through fall. Known for its tough root system and ability to colonize, it’s commonly used in restoration and slope stabilization projects. One standout variety is Diervilla ‘Kodiak Orange’ (Proven Winners), a nativar with a more clump-forming habit and stunning orange foliage that adds visual appeal even when not in bloom. Got dry shade? This is a perfect choice for adding structure and seasonal colour to your shade garden.

2. Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis)

Eastern Redbud

Known for its charming pink, pea-like flowers that bloom before the heart-shaped leaves emerge in early spring, this small ornamental tree typically reaches heights of 15–20 feet. A favourite in many landscapes, the classic Eastern Redbud is available in both single-stem and clump forms. For a unique twist, consider varieties like Lavender Twist or Vanilla Twist, which offer elegant weeping shapes. If you’re looking to add rich foliage colour, Midnight Express delivers striking burgundy leaves throughout the growing season.

3. Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia)

Russian Sage

Often grouped with drought-tolerant plants like lavender, Russian Sage offers similar airy blooms and fragrant foliage—but with a bit more resilience in our local conditions. While lavender can be finicky and slow to establish in our area, Russian Sage tends to be a more reliable alternative. For smaller spaces, consider a compact variety like Little Spire, which stays in the 1–2 ft range compared to the typical 4–5 ft height. To keep it looking its best, cut back in early April to about 8 inches—roughly the size of a large Tim Hortons cup—to promote dense branching and better flower production.

4. Junipers (Juniperus)

Juniper

This sun-loving evergreen offers incredible versatility, with varieties available in a wide range of colours—from mint green and vibrant yellow to deep blue—and sizes that span from low-growing groundcovers to upright tree forms reaching up to 20 feet. Creeping types like Blue Pacific Juniper are ideal for hot, dry areas along sidewalks, walkways, or in rock gardens. They’re not only heat- and salt-tolerant but also easy to maintain with occasional pruning to keep their shape and size in check.

5. Warm-Season Grasses

Indian Grass

These low-maintenance plants bring texture, movement, and year-round interest to the landscape. Native prairie grasses like Big Bluestem and Little Bluestem offer striking vertical form and beautiful seed heads that add seasonal colour. One of our favourites is the lesser-known native Savannah Grass (Sorghastrum nutans), a graceful grass often found in sandy, coastal environments. Reaching heights of 4–6 feet, it works beautifully as a natural privacy screen—especially when planted in groups of three or five. In fall, its bronze seed heads provide a visual treat and valuable food source for local wildlife.

A Friendly Reminder (or Two!) Before You Plant:

Even drought-tolerant plants need a good start.

Just because a plant is labelled drought-resistant doesn’t mean it can thrive on neglect—at least not right away. During their first two growing seasons, these plants still need consistent watering to help develop deep, healthy root systems. Think of it as helping them build the resilience they’re known for.

Water wisely for long-term success.

Try to avoid watering during the hottest part of the day, as this can scorch leaves and increase stress on your plants. Instead, aim for early morning or late evening, and always water at the base. A slow trickle at soil level—rather than overhead watering—encourages deeper root growth and minimizes evaporation. Deep, occasional waterings are far more effective than a daily sprinkle.

Summer heat and dry conditions don’t have to mean a dull, struggling garden. With the right plants, you can create a vibrant, thriving outdoor space that stays beautiful even in the toughest weather. Whether you’re looking for colourful shrubs, fragrant perennials, or textured grasses, these heat- and drought-tolerant options are sure to inspire your next garden project.
