We may be in the depths of winter at the moment, but if you are anything like me, as soon as the New Year rolls around, I start dreaming about what I want to do with my garden and landscape in the spring!
Aside from what I intend to plant, I also like to start planning big projects ahead of time, so I can hit the ground running once the snow melts, and we have been thinking a lot about water features in these parts lately! While not everyone has the financial means, space, or even interest in installing a full-on swimming pool, they are certainly not the only way to enjoy the ambiance of water in your yard.
Here are a few different ways to add a water feature to your landscape this spring.
Design a Water Feature Around an Outdoor Living Space
Outdoor living spaces have become increasingly popular these days as gathering outdoors became a bit of a preferred ‘norm.’ If this is something you have considered adding to your yard, why not incorporate a water feature along with it? Outdoor living rooms and kitchens are intended as both entertainment and relaxation spaces. By integrating a pond or stream into your outdoor living space design, you will add an element of tranquility that can’t be beaten.
Combine the Elements of Fire and Water
Fireplaces are a popular feature in outdoor living spaces, and there is just something intrinsically satisfying about the combination of fire and water. Just imagine sitting in your backyard, watching the flames gently flicker with the soothing sound of a fountain lightly bubbling nearby…feels good, doesn’t it?
Cater to Your Local Wildlife
One of the most affordable ways to incorporate a water feature into your outdoor landscape is with a birdbath. You can opt for a basic, simple, basin-style birdbath or kick it up a notch by opting for one with a fountain. It really just depends on what you want to invest into it financially and how you want to maintain it. Fountains tend to come with pumps and filters and do require some seasonal maintenance, but they also offer some lovely added ambiance!
Design a Zen Meditation Garden Around a Water Feature
Let’s face it; the world is a bit of a crazy place these days. Zen meditation gardens are a lovely way to retreat, relax, and take a moment for yourself when you get home. The sound of water running is naturally soothing, and you can incorporate it into your meditation garden in a variety of ways. You can purchase free-standing fountains with a particularly Zen vibe to them, or you can install something extra gorgeous like a spillway wall or even a backyard waterfall.
Interactive Fountains
Say what now?! Yep, interactive fountains are a really fun, family-friendly way to incorporate a water feature into your home. They’re just like the splash pad at your local park, except you’ll have it all to yourself!
Install a Solar Water Feature
Here we are not necessarily referring to a particular type of water feature but rather the technology which powers it. Solar-powered water features are eco-friendly, affordable, and eliminate the need to run wires to your water feature. You can find solar-powered water fountains, cascading water features, and waterfalls.
Natural Backyard Pond
Installing a backyard pond is not as challenging as it may sound, and it brings a lovely natural feel to any yard or landscape. They can be as big or small and as simple or extravagant as you like. You can build a deck around a backyard pond, incorporate a waterfall into it, make it large enough to keep fish in or keep things simple with a tiny stone pond that you can build yourself with a few basic materials.
