Herbs

Kitchen herb gardens have been a trending topic for many years, and the buzz continues to grow as the cost of food continues to rise. There are so many great things about growing your own herbs, and the satisfaction of knowing they are healthy, clean plants will be well worth the work to get there. Herbs require bright light throughout the day and generally won’t give you a good performance if you fail to meet this requirement. A sunny windowsill is ideal—if not, try a grow light. If your kitchen is short on space, narrow down your choices to herbs you normally use, like mint, sage, parsley, dill, thyme, or rosemary.

Veggies

It may sound like hard work growing veggies indoors, but like herbs, some veggies are quite easy to grow in kitchens. If you’re trying to decide how to grow the best edibles indoors, here are some perfect candidates to get you started:

  • Green onions. You can actually grow green onions in water because they are that easy! Simply pop the roots of your scraps into a glass jar and watch them climb. You can also grow celery and lettuce by submerging the base in water.

  • Greens / Microgreens. Plants like lettuce, spinach, kale, arugula, and microgreens are ones to consider if you want to grow the best of the best. Microgreens are not only super-packed with nutrition, but they can also be harvested in just a couple of weeks!

  • Radish. Among the best edibles to grow in your kitchen garden, radishes grow quickly (in about 30 days) and don’t require as much light as other garden plants.

Other Plants You Can Grow in Your Kitchen

Aside from all of the tasty edibles you can grow in your kitchen, there are a number of awesome houseplants that require little care that you can add to the mix. Some of our favourite houseplants are also super air-purifiers, so having them close by will keep that kitchen air fresh all year long!

  • Snake Plants: While you could totally keep a snake plant in any room of your home, having one in the kitchen adds architectural interest and a daily boost of oxygen. Snake plants are perfect because they are tolerant of lower light and dry soil, and let’s face it—they look out of this world with their tall, striped, spiky leaves.
  • Peace Lily: these plants need low to indirect light, consistent moisture and humidity (perfect for a kitchen or bathroom). Peace lilies are also forgiving, and like a hydrangea, will let you know when they need to be watered.

  • Pothos: This family of plants certainly belongs on the list of the easiest to grow and can be hung in a basket beside your kitchen window.

  • Aloe Vera: A succulent plant that is very hardy, and the healing gel inside its leaves might come in handy the next time you accidentally burn yourself in the kitchen!
